Under 16?It is illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to operate boat capable of 17 knots or more on Irish coastal or inland waters. For this reason participants under the age of 16 may only participate on those courses where they may do so in displacement boats. It is recommended that the Introduction To Powerboating Certificate be used to introduce young powerboaters to good boating practice. Under 12s may not operate boats with engines over 5Hp. Irish Sailing policy recommends that under 16s do not operate any powerboat without appropriate and competent adult supervision.

I want to get my boat licence. Have I come to the right place?Yes. People often refer to the National Powerboat Certificate as their "powerboat licence" or "level 2". The National Powerboat Certificate (a two day course) is the minimum recognised certification rather than qualification for powerboating in Ireland from an insurance perspective.
-
I've never driven a boat before. What course should I do?If you've never skippered a boat before we recommend you start off with the Introduction to Powerboating (1 day course). From there you may progress on to the National Powerboat Certificate.
-
I have a little bit of of powerboat experience. Should I do the Introduction to Powerboating or go straight to the National Powerboat Certificate? We strongly recommend completing the Introduction to Powerboating (IP) before the National Powerboat Certificate(NPB). We find that where students have already completed the Introduction to Powerboating that they get a lot more value when they go onto the NPB having learned the "soft skills" like knot tying and Man Overboard drills on the Introduction to Powerboating. As such more time can be spent on the fun stuff when the student progresses to the NPB!
-
Do you run courses outside of Kilrush? Our instructors teach in different organisations so from time to time you may see some familiar faces in other parts of the country, however, Atlantic Powerboating's Centre is based in Kilrush. Some our courses take us as far as West as Loophead and Eastwards into Limerick City though! If you are a centre looking for instructors please do not hesitate to contact us. We sometimes run courses on behalf of other Irish Sailing Centres. Email us at info@atlanticpowerboating.ie for more info
