Objective
The aim of this course is to introduce participants to the techniques and skills used in powerboats which are:
-
escorting racing fleets of dinghies, windsurfers and canoes,
-
providing safety and rescue cover for training fleets,
-
assisting in race and water-based event management duties.
Previous Knowledge
Participants must hold the Irish Sailing National Powerboat Certificate or an equivalent certificate with 20hrs of logged helming experience following certification.
It is strongly recommended that at least one member of a safety boat’s crew should hold a first aid certificate and the Short Range (SRC) VHF radio operator’s certificate.

What to bring
Your powerboating gear appropriate for all weather conditions. A wetsuit or drysuit so you can enter the water as well as a buoyancy aid or manual lifejacket (not automatic).

Notepad, whistle, knife/multitool.

NB: We do not provide any waterproof or wet gear. Participants without the appropriate gear will not be allowed on the water. Participants must be prepared for boating in all conditions, whatever the forecasted weather may be.
Equipment included
Buoyancy Aid, Course notes, Kayaks, Dinghies and other Safety Boat equipment for different scenarios.
Boats
RIB with 40HP Outboard, Displacement craft with tiller outboard, Other RIBs and displacement craft.
Pre-Course
Pre-course requisites include National Powerboat Certificate or an equivalent certificate with 20hrs of logged helming experience following certification.
No. of Persons on Course
4 participants with 1 instructor and one boat or 6 participants with 1 instructor in two boats
NB: This course will only run with a minimum of 3 participants.

Syllabus
The Safety Boat Certificate has 3 modules. All Safety Boat courses must cover a minimum of module 1 plus one of the other two modules, the certificate issued will reflect the module/s covered.;

Module 1: Core skills, to be completed by all participants

Module 2: Sailing / Watersports safety cover and fleet management

Module 3: Non-sailing safety cover and event support (Powerboat racing, Community events, Swims etc.)
